Grayton Beach State Park, FL.
Grayton Beach State Park is on the Gulf Coast midway between Destin and Panama City in Florida. It has a small section of the beach that runs the length of this coast and it's notable for the lack of development behind the dunes. The park is small and is part bounded by a small lake. General Stuff
The park sits on an unspoiled section of Sugar Sand beach, midway between Destin and Panama City. There's development to teh right and left but this segment of beach is pretty much left in its original condition. There are two campgrounds, the older of the two flanked by a brackish lake, about a quarter of a mile from the beach. The camping sites are large and reasonably private and some back onto the lake with views of the ocean. There are two bath houses, one with laundry facilities. There is no park store but there are shops and restaurants in either direction along the coast.
Opinion
We booked three nights here and wished we'd had time for more. The camp site was reasonable and backed onto the lake, with electricity and water hookups. The bath houses were fine, one older than the other and more than a little tired looking, but both were good to use. The park is all about the lake for boating and fishing, and the beach. The sugar sand was fabulous and the sea was blood warm; very strange for a northern body like mine. The weather here was hot and with the inevitable late afternoon storms, but we managed to visit the beach and the surrounding area without getting too wet. An excellent park that we'd like to re-visit. Last visited July 2011.
