Glimmerglass State Park, NY.
Click here to see the official State Park website. Glimmerglass State Park is situated at the northern end of Lake Glimmerglass, five miles or so from the famous New York town of Cooperstown, home of the US Baseball Hall of Fame. The park is blessed with a broad, curved beach that attracts many day use visitors. Swimming is excellent and well patrolled by a team of lifeguards. On site is an excellent example of a covered bridge.
General Stuff
The campground is small and very attractive, with level, crushed stone pads, power but no water or sewer points. The area is wooded and very quiet, kept apart from the beach area by a small river and stand of trees. The comfort station was clean and tidy, albeit a little tired looking as it was quite old, but perfectly serviceable. Garbage and re-cycling facilities were good and well organised.
Opinion
We loved this park, both the campground and the beach area. The park ranger stayed on to book us in when we were running a bit late on arrival and made us feel very welcome. The sites were excellent; secluded enough but not hidden away, and all the facilities were present and in good order. The park isn't far from Cooperstown, famed for it's Baseball Hall of Fame, but also an excellent, and very affluent looking, example of an upstate New York town, with well kept wooden houses from the Victorian era very much in evidence. James Fennimore Cooper hailed from Cooperstown and his influence is clear to see, from the statue and library in his name, to the name of the lake, after a fictional lake in his Leatherstocking Tales series of historical novels. This is a park and town to which we will return.
